Fishing Report
Updated as of: Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Rising water surface temps, calm, clear, sunny days have gotten the fish more active and anglers have been coming in with some impressive catches. Both charters and private boaters have been reaping the benefits of nice weather and happy fish.
The Koxlien's from western Wisconsin visited Algoma the past two days and along with a couple coolers of fish filets to take home, fater, Quenton Koxlien captured this 22.6 lb. King Salmon aboard the Grand Illusion, Tuesday morning. The king fell to a pink w/grape dots R & R spoon on a lead core set-up.
Fishing in 100' to 250' of water and straight out of the harbor, charters reported some limit catches, but many double digit and near limit catches. Flasher and fly combos in white/aqua, chrome/aqua and white/frog produced most of the bites, I've also have some good morning action on a green 10" assassin and mistake fly run behind a 10 once weight. Spoons run on the surface and near surface have also taken many steelhead. Silver/pink, silver/orange, gold/pink, gold/orange have all been good colors. Flame throwers and pearl yecks have also been popular.
The morning bite has been pretty good and while daytime hours slow a bit, there seems to be steady action and fish are taken all day long. Recent evenings have also been pretty good with most anglers moving closer to shore in 60' to 120' to pick up some good king action at dusk.
I've also been hearing scattered reports from private fisherman and some have also been having success on some kings in the deeper water. A pretty good mixture of Steelhead, Kings, Cohos Lake Trout and a few Brown Trout have been reported lately.
From Capt. Lee, and crew aboard the Grand Illusion, here's wishing all the best 2008 season, and I hope to see all of you this coming summer on the water! Remember, as more boats venture out and fishing areas start to get crowed, give plenty of room to other boats and stay well back or off to the side, so as to not cut off longer leadcore line set-ups. My best fishing is always off away from other boats and boat traffic. Good Luck and Good Fishing!
